Bottomfeeders - Stingray

For this project my goal was to create characters for a near-future post-apocalyptic world where survival is harsh and martial. We follow a society of people whose daily bread has always been the sea, but due to environmental destruction, war, and sabotage, the barren and toxic ocean could no longer sustain them. On the brink of extinction, they were forced into scavenging and raiding. Once they took the plunge, they never looked back. Due to their history, they are still tightly intertwined with the ocean and I wanted to showcase this through their designs, religion, shape language, and so on. It's a tragedy where the circumstances have warped something once beautiful into a twisted joke of what it was.
 

I wanted to mix the vintage adventurous pirate with the grounded modern sea robber while still keeping my designs firmly in the fictional realm. Since modern-day piracy is a complex issue, I thought it best to not get too close to any real-world influences. 

This project was developed during 8 weeks half-time (20h/week).
